From drawing to delivered steelwork

Norfolk steel fabricators who build to the engineer's drawing.

A steel order runs better when you know who is cutting and welding it, and when it will arrive on site.

Swift Fabrication Services Ltd is a welding and steel fabrication company based in Norwich. We make structural steelwork for builders, main contractors, farmers, factories and homeowners, working from your structural engineer's drawings and explaining each stage in plain English.

We fabricate the steel. We do not design or certify the structure. Section sizes, connections and calculations come from your structural engineer, and we can help develop the details so the steel is practical to make and fit. If you want it installed too, our own team can deliver and erect the steelwork on your site.

The steelwork we make

Steel beams, steel frames and mezzanine floors.

Every job is cut, drilled and welded to the drawing. These are the main kinds of structural steelwork we make, from a single beam to a full building frame.

01 / Beams and openings

RSJs, goalpost frames, columns, lintels.

Steel beams for extensions, knock-throughs and loft conversions, in UB and UC sections cut to length. Goalpost and box frames, columns with baseplates, lintels, end plates, cleats and splices where access is tight.

02 / Frames and buildings

Portal frames, purlins, mezzanines.

Steel frames for agricultural, commercial and industrial buildings: portal frames, columns, rafters, purlins and cladding rails. Mezzanine floors for storage and production space, with stairs and handrails to match.

03 / Platforms and supports

Platforms, walkways, supports.

Plant platforms, access walkways with handrails, pipe supports, machine bases and brackets for factories and process sites. We measure on site where the steel has to fit around existing plant, pipework or structure.

Drawing to delivery

From your drawing to steel on site.

Send us the engineer's drawings and we price the job as a free estimate. Once you agree the price, we check dimensions, measure on site if the steel has to fit an existing building, and confirm sections, plates and hole positions before we cut.

In our Norwich workshop the steel is cut, drilled and welded, then trial fitted where connections are complex. It is usually primed, and finishes such as paint, galvanising or powder coating can be arranged. We deliver to site, by HIAB lorry for heavier loads, and our team can install it, lined, levelled and bolted up.

Tell us about access before delivery day. Narrow lanes, soft ground and overhead cables all change how steel gets onto your site.

Plan your steel order

Get your steel priced before you build.

Steel is often on the critical path. A builder cannot open up a wall until the beam is on site, and a frame cannot go up until the foundations and anchor bolts are ready. Tell us your programme early and we will plan the fabrication around it.

Send the engineer's drawings, the site address, the finish you need and your dates. If the job calls for a particular standard or welder coding, tell us and we will confirm what we can supply. An enquiry is a request for an estimate, not a confirmed order.

A little preparation

What to send for an accurate quote.

Start with the structural engineer's drawing and calculation sheet, which should show section sizes, lengths and connections. Add photographs of the site, the access for delivery, floor levels and any lifting limits. If you only have a sketch, send it and we will tell you what else is needed.

We supply structural steel to Norwich, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Thetford, Dereham, Wymondham, Diss, King's Lynn, Beccles, Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds, and to the farms, estates and villages between them across East Anglia.

How long does steel fabrication take?

It depends on the size of the job, the sections needed and our workshop load at the time. A single beam is quicker than a building frame. Send the drawings and your programme dates and we will give you a realistic delivery date before you commit.

Do you make single beams and RSJs?

Yes. We make single steel beams for extensions and knock-throughs as well as full frames, for homeowners and builders alike. We need the section size and length from your structural engineer, plus any end plates, splices or padstone details, to price it properly.

Can you work out what size beam I need?

No. Sizing a beam or frame is a structural engineer's job, and Building Control will normally want to see the calculations. Once you have the drawing, we make the steel to it. We can suggest practical details, such as splitting a beam so it can be carried in.

Will you cut steel before I have agreed a price?

No. You get a free estimate first, and the price is agreed with you before we start. If the drawings change after that, we tell you what it does to the cost before any steel is cut.

Can you install the steel too?

Yes. Our team installs and erects structural steelwork across Norfolk and Suffolk, from a single beam into an existing house to a full portal frame. Lifting is planned with suitable plant, and we provide RAMS for site work alongside your builder or main contractor.

What do you need to quote for steelwork?

The engineer's drawings, the site address, the finish required and your target date. Photographs of the site and the access help too. Our quote checklist lists everything, so nothing holds up your estimate.
