Steel that has to live by the sea

Great Yarmouth steelwork, fabricated for salt air and hard use.

Within a mile or two of the North Sea, the finish on a steel frame matters nearly as much as the welds.

Swift Fabrication Services Ltd is a welding and steel fabrication company based in Norwich, roughly 20 miles from Great Yarmouth by the A47 and the Acle Straight. We make structural steel for businesses around the port and outer harbour, yards on South Denes, units on Harfreys and Gapton Hall, holiday parks and local builders.

Your structural engineer sets the section sizes, connections and calculations, and we fabricate to those drawings. We do not design or certify the structure. Where we help is in the detail: vent and drain holes for the galvanisers, bolted joints in place of site welds that would burn the coating, and piece sizes that suit both the galvanising bath and the lorry.

Steel for a port town

Frames, platforms and beams for the Yarmouth coast.

Three kinds of job come up most around Great Yarmouth: steel for port and energy yards, frames for units and leisure sites, and beams for local builders.

01 / Port and energy yards

Platforms, racks, supports, walkways.

Access platforms, storage racks, laydown frames, pipe supports, walkways with handrails and chequer plate steps for yards around the outer harbour and South Denes. Mostly galvanised, with bolted connections so nothing needs welding once it has been coated.

02 / Estates and leisure

Portal frames, canopies, mezzanines.

Portal frames, purlins and cladding rails for new units at Harfreys, Gapton Hall and Beacon Park in Gorleston. Mezzanine floors for stores and workshops. Canopies, plant decks and frames for holiday parks and seafront attractions, where the public can see the steel and the sea can reach it.

03 / Builders and homes

RSJs, goalposts, balcony steel.

UB and UC beams for extensions and knock-throughs in Gorleston, Caister and Bradwell, goalpost frames for wide openings, columns with baseplates and lintels. External steel, such as balcony supports facing the sea, is best galvanised before any paint goes on.

Mobile welding in Great Yarmouth

Send the drawings from your engineer and a free estimate comes back. Say at the same time how close to the sea the steel will stand and what finish the specification asks for, because a galvanised job is detailed differently from a primed one, right down to the hole positions.

Once the price is agreed, fabrication takes place in the Norwich workshop. If the steel is to be galvanised or powder coated, we arrange that before delivery, which adds days to the programme, so allow for it. The finished load then heads out along the A47, on a HIAB lorry when it is heavy, and our team can erect it on your site if you want. Later alterations can be welded on site.

Quayside and seafront sites often have set delivery slots, gatehouse rules and summer traffic. Give us the details before we book the lorry.

Allow for the coating

Build galvanising time into your dates.

Hot dip galvanising happens away from our workshop, after fabrication and before delivery, so the programme has to leave room for it. If your Great Yarmouth job has a fixed start, a vessel to meet or a season opening, give us that date with the enquiry and we will work back from it.

Along with the drawings, give us the site address, the coating specification and anything the client's paperwork demands, such as a welding standard or welder coding. We will say plainly what we can supply before you place an order. Asking for an estimate commits you to nothing.

What a coastal quote needs from you.

Begin with the engineer's drawings and any coating specification. Then say where the steel will stand: open quayside, a yard set back from the river, or inside a building. Add photographs, the delivery route, gate or permit requirements and lifting limits. A rough sketch is enough to open the conversation.

We supply structural steel across Great Yarmouth, Gorleston, Caister and Bradwell, and to Acle and the Broadland villages along the A47 on the way. The same workshop serves Lowestoft down the coast and the rest of Norfolk and Suffolk.

Yarmouth questions

Structural steel fabrication in Great Yarmouth: FAQs

Galvanising, travel, port paperwork and beams for local builders, answered.

More fabrication FAQs
Should steel near the seafront be galvanised?

For exposed steel in Great Yarmouth, usually yes. Salt air gets under paint on bare mild steel quickly, so hot dip galvanising, with paint over the top if colour matters, is the common specification. Your engineer or designer sets the finish and we arrange it.

Do you cover Gorleston and Caister?

Yes. Gorleston, Caister, Bradwell and the villages towards Acle are all on the same run from Norwich, about 20 miles along the A47. We come out to measure where steel has to fit an existing building, and we deliver and install throughout the borough.

Can you design a platform for our yard?

We can help develop a layout so it is practical to fabricate, and we build to the dimensions you need. The structural calculations must come from your own structural engineer, since we do not design or certify structures. Once a drawing exists, we make it.

Can you meet an offshore client's welding spec?

Tell us the standard or welder coding the job calls for and we will confirm what we can supply before quoting. Coded welders are available on request. We would sooner say no than guess.

Will you erect the steel on site?

Yes. Our team erects frames, platforms and beams in Great Yarmouth and along the coast, with lifting planned round the site and crane or telehandler hire arranged where needed. RAMS are provided, and we follow the inductions and permit systems on port and energy premises.

What do you need to quote for a steel frame?

Engineer's drawings, the site address, the coating required and the date you need steel on site. For Great Yarmouth jobs, tell us about exposure to the sea and any port access rules as well.
