Steel staircases, balustrades and handrails for homes and commercial buildings. We fabricate every part in our Norwich workshop, then deliver and assemble it on site across East Anglia.

Based in Norwich. Stairs fitted across Norfolk and Suffolk.

Metal staircases for East Anglia

Steel staircases are built as a kit of parts.

Nobody welds a whole staircase in one lump. It is made as separate pieces that go together on site.

Swift Fabrication makes steel staircases for domestic and commercial customers across Norfolk and Suffolk. Stringers are cut from plate or channel. Treads are chequer plate, folded pans or made ready for timber.

Landings and balustrade panels are fabricated as their own pieces. Where the fit is tight we trial fit the parts in the workshop before anything is finished. Then the steel is primed, painted, galvanised or powder coated as arranged, delivered to site and assembled by our fitters, one bolted joint at a time.

Stairs, balustrades and handrails

Tell us where the stair goes, then we make it fit.

Send us the drawings, or the floor to floor height and the space available. We can help develop the layout for fabrication and give you a free estimate.

01 / Internal stairs

Straight, quarter and half turn flights.

Straight flights, quarter turn and half turn stairs with landings, for houses, offices, shops and workshops. Treads can be chequer plate, folded steel pans or plates drilled ready for your joiner to fix timber on top.

02 / External and access

Fire escape and mezzanine stairs.

External and fire escape stairs, usually galvanised, with chequer plate treads and landings. Mezzanine stairs for warehouses and factories, made to suit the platform and the floor below.

03 / Balustrades and rails

Steel balustrades and handrails.

Metal balustrades for stairs, landings, balconies and mezzanine edges, with vertical bar, flat bar or glass-ready infill. Wall handrails and post mounted handrails in mild or stainless steel to match.

We build to the figures you are given

Rise, going, heights and loadings come from your designer.

Stairs and balustrades have to satisfy Building Regulations. The numbers that matter are the rise, the going, the handrail and guarding heights, the gaps in the infill and the loadings. Those are set by your designer or Building Control.

We fabricate to those dimensions and work from your drawings. We do not certify compliance ourselves, and any structural calculations come from your structural engineer. If a detail will be awkward to make or fit, we say so early.

Tell us if Building Control has already commented on the stair, so we price the right version.

Getting a staircase quote

What we need to price a stair.

Send drawings if you have them. If not, tell us the floor to floor height, the width, the space at top and bottom, the tread type, indoors or outdoors, and the finish you want. Photos of the opening help.

Lead time depends on the design, the finish and the access on site. Galvanising and powder coating are arranged with outside finishers, so allow for that stage. Where a stair has to fit existing walls or floors, we measure on site before we cut any steel.

Steel staircase FAQs

Before you order a steel staircase.

Do you make stairs for houses as well?

Yes. We make domestic and commercial staircases, from a single straight flight in a house to fire escape and mezzanine stairs for a business. Send the drawings or sizes and we will price it.

Will my staircase meet Building Regs?

We build to the rise, going, heights and loadings your designer or Building Control specify. We do not certify compliance ourselves, so agree the design with them before we fabricate.

Can I have timber treads or glass infill?

Yes. We make treads timber-ready, with steel plates or pans drilled for your joiner. Balustrade panels can be made glass-ready, with the fixings set out to suit the glass your glazier supplies.

How does a steel staircase get into the building?

In pieces. Stringers, treads, landings and balustrade panels arrive separately and are assembled in place, so a stair can go through a normal doorway or up to a mezzanine.
