Unit frames and extensions at Ellough, boat sheds and workshop steel beside the Waveney, and beams for builders in the town. Fabricated in Norwich, 18 miles up the A146, and erected by the same people once your ground is ready.

Steel erectors for Beccles sites

Two kinds of site in one small town.

Up at Ellough the ground is flat, open and hard. Down by the river it is none of those. The steel is planned to suit.

Swift Fabrication provides steel erection in Beccles for unit owners, boatyards, builders and farms in the Waveney valley. On the Ellough Industrial Estate and Beccles Business Park, laid out on the old airfield, that means unit frames, extensions, mezzanines and canopies. By the water it means boat sheds, workshop frames and lean-tos.

What the steel stands on decides how it goes up. An estate plot usually has room to stack steel and set up a crane or telehandler. A yard by the Waveney may offer a narrow lane, a soft verge and water along one side. We ask the same things of both: where the lorry stops, where plant can stand, and what your engineer says the ground will bear.

From survey to last bolt

How steel erection in Beccles is put together.

We come and look before we price. You then get the sequence, the plant we propose to hire and the cost, all agreed before work begins.

01 / Ground and way in

Where lorry and plant can stand.

Bases and bolts are checked against the drawings, then we follow the route a lorry must take to your gate. Turning room, overhead cables, soft edges and slipways are noted, because they decide what size of plant is any use.

02 / The frame goes up

Sized to the plant that fits.

With room to work, columns and rafters are lifted by hired telehandler or crane and bolted up from a MEWP. Where only small plant can reach, the frame is made in lighter pieces with extra bolted splices and erected at a steadier pace.

03 / True it and tighten

Square, plumb and ready to clad.

With bracing in, the frame is pulled square, plumbed and levelled on its packs, and every bolt is tightened. A boat shed door opening gets extra care, since a tall sliding door will not run on a frame that is out.

Boat sheds beside the Waveney

Riverside steel needs early answers.

A shed for hauling out and working on boats wants height, a wide clear door and often a lifting beam. Give your engineer the tallest boat, the hoist load and the door you have in mind, and we will make and erect what they design.

Ground beside a river is rarely as firm as it looks. Whether pads, a raft or piles are needed is for your engineer, the concrete is your groundworker's, and any consent for building near the water is yours to obtain. Damp air is hard on paint, so galvanising can be arranged for the frame.

RAMS are provided for site work. A working yard stays open around us, so tell us about slipway times, craning days and visiting boats.

Ellough and the business park

Units on the old airfield.

Light industrial firms at Ellough tend to outgrow a unit before they want to leave it. We erect extensions and new frames, first floor office decks, storage mezzanines and canopies over loading doors. The old airfield is level and open, which makes delivery and lifting simpler than in most places.

In Beccles itself, builders use us for steel beam installation over knock-throughs and rear extensions in the older streets, with beams spliced where the only way in is a side passage.

Beccles and the valley

Eighteen miles out on the A146.

Beccles sits between Norwich and Lowestoft on the Suffolk bank of the Waveney, and the A146 takes our lorry most of the way to Ellough. From there we reach Worlingham, Bungay, Halesworth and Loddon back on the Norfolk side. A second visit to check bases is no hardship at this range.

Send the engineer's drawings, the address, and photographs of the ground and of the road or track in. Say who is doing the groundworks, when bases will be cast and whether the yard or unit stays open. Estimates cost nothing, and no work starts until you have agreed the price.

Beccles questions

Asked by unit owners and boatyards.

Can you put up a boat shed frame?

Yes. We fabricate and erect the frame, the door framing, cladding rails and any lifting beam shown on the engineer's drawings. Foundations are by your groundworker and sheeting by your cladder, and we time our work around both.

Our yard is down a narrow lane. Can steel get in?

Probably, with planning. We look at the lane, then choose the lorry, the piece lengths and the plant to suit. Sometimes steel is offloaded at the road and carried down by telehandler. If it cannot be done safely you will know before you spend money.

Who checks the ground will take it?

Your structural engineer. They design the foundations for the ground you have, and near the river may ask for trial holes or a soil report. Your groundworker builds them. We check the finished bases and bolts against the drawing before steel is delivered.

Do you cover Bungay and Halesworth?

Yes, and Worlingham, Loddon and the villages along the valley. None is far from our usual road south east, so the estimate is worked out just as it would be for Beccles.
