New housing growth around Ipswich brings new commercial units, schools and retail steel with it. We erect the frames: columns stood, beams lifted in, bolted up, lined and levelled, to the programme your main contractor sets.

Steel erection for new estates

Steel erection for Ipswich's new estates.

A new estate does not wait for one contractor, so the steel frame has to go up square, first time.

Swift Fabrication erects steel for the commercial units, schools and retail buildings going up as Ipswich's housing estates expand. Our erectors install steel frames, portal frames, mezzanines, platforms and stairs, working from our Norwich workshop.

We erect steel we have fabricated ourselves, and can also quote to erect steel bought in from elsewhere. Send the engineer's drawings and tell us about the new build site: access for delivery, ground conditions still being finished, and who else is on site. We plan the sequence and lifting around that.

The site sequence

Steel frame erection for a new Ipswich estate.

A new estate site is never quite finished when steel arrives, but the order of work stays much the same. We agree the sequence, the plant and the price before anything is lifted.

01 / Bases and delivery

Checking bases against the drawing.

Before steel arrives on a new Ipswich plot we check the bases, levels and holding down bolts against the drawings, since a bolt group that is out is far easier to sort before delivery than after. Steel is then offloaded and laid out in the order it goes up.

02 / Columns, beams, rafters

Lifting and standing the frame.

Columns go up on packs and get braced first. Beams and rafters follow, lifted with whatever plant the site allows, a telehandler, crane or MEWP hired in as needed given the space a new estate road can offer. Connections are bolted snug as each piece lands.

03 / Line, level and plumb

Squared, levelled, then tightened.

Once the frame is standing we line, level and plumb it, adjusting packs and bracing until it reads true. Only then do the bolts get their final tightening, and we tell your groundworks team when the bases are ready to grout.

Steel we fabricate, or steel bought in

The steel we forged, or steel from elsewhere.

Most frames we erect are ones we fabricated ourselves in Norwich, so every connection is already familiar before it reaches an Ipswich site, marked up in the order the build needs it.

We can also price erecting steelwork somebody else has fabricated. Send the general arrangement and connection drawings, the steel list and a delivery plan, and we will flag anything on a new build drawing that looks awkward before we quote.

Risk assessments and method statements are provided for every site. Tell us the induction and site rules for your Ipswich plot and we will confirm what we can supply.

Beams into buildings already standing

Steel for new plots too.

Not every job on a growing estate is a brand new frame. Builders also call us for beams into the first phase of houses that are already up: RSJs over a knock-through, goalpost frames for an extension, or a box frame for a wide opening. Beams can be spliced where access is tight.

We agree with your builder who is propping the opening, who is setting the padstones and when it will be ready for steel. On the estate's commercial units we also install mezzanines, platforms and stairs.

Steel erection questions

What to know before booking Ipswich erectors.

Will you erect steel made by others near Ipswich?

Yes. We quote to erect steelwork supplied by another fabricator on an Ipswich site the same way we price our own: general arrangement and connection drawings, a steel list and delivery details, then a figure once we have seen what is involved.

Do you arrange a crane or telehandler for lifting?

Lifting gets planned around whatever plant suits the job, a telehandler, crane or MEWP hired in as needed, which matters more on a tight new estate road than an open field. If your site already has plant and an operator, tell us and we plan around it.

How long does an erection job take?

That depends on the piece count, the access on an Ipswich plot, the plant needed and whether the bases are ready. A beam into an existing house is a short visit, a new commercial frame a longer programme. Realistic dates follow once we have seen the drawings.

Will you provide RAMS for our site?

Yes. Risk assessments and method statements are provided for every site we erect on. If an Ipswich site calls for a particular standard or welder coding, tell us and we will confirm what we can supply.
