Steel erection in Bury St Edmunds

New housing and new units going up around Bury St Edmunds need frames stood, beams lifted in and stairs fitted. We erect the steel, bolted up, lined and levelled.

Fabricate and erectRAMS for site work

Bury St Edmunds, about 41 miles south west, down the A14.

Steelwork for expanding sites

Where the town is building, we are erecting.

A frame that stands square and plumb starts with bases and holding down bolts checked before the first lift.

New units at Moreton Hall and Suffolk Business Park, new homes on the edges of town, and older buildings being converted all keep our erectors busy in and around Bury St Edmunds.

Steel we have fabricated ourselves goes up under our own team, and we will also price erecting steel bought in elsewhere. Send the engineer's drawings, the access down the A14 and who else is booked on site.

The site sequence

From bases to final bolts on a new build.

Every site is different, but the order of work is much the same. We agree the sequence, the plant and the price before we start.

01 / Bases and delivery

Checking bases before the wagon arrives.

Ahead of delivery to Bury St Edmunds we walk the bases, checking levels and the holding down bolts against the drawing. Anything out of place is far simpler to fix now than with steel sat on top of it.

02 / Columns, beams, rafters

Standing the frame for a new unit or house.

Columns stand on packs and get braced first. Then beams and rafters come in with plant matched to the site and its access, hired for the day, and each connection is bolted up snug as it lands.

03 / Line, level and plumb

Lined and levelled before final tightening.

Once the frame stands, packs and bracing get adjusted until it lines up plumb and level. Final tightening comes after that, and we let you know as soon as bases are ready for grout.

Whose steel we are lifting

Steel we made in Norwich, or steel you bought in.

Steel we put up around Bury St Edmunds is usually our own work, so every connection is familiar to us before it leaves Norwich, marked ready for the order it goes up in.

Where the steel comes from a different fabricator, send the general arrangement and connection drawings, a steel list and the delivery plan, and we will flag early anything tricky to build.

Site work comes with risk assessments and method statements as standard. Let us know your site's own rules and we will say plainly what we can meet.

Beams into existing buildings

Not every job here is a new frame.

Plenty of our calls here come from builders converting older buildings or extending houses: an RSJ over a knock-through, a goalpost frame for a rear extension, a box frame where the opening is wide.

Propping, padstones and the timing of the opening get agreed with your builder beforehand. The same visit type covers mezzanines and platforms going into a new commercial unit.

Steel erection questions

What to know before you book us for a new site.

Will you erect steel made by another fabricator?

Yes, that is common on a mixed site. We just need the general arrangement and connection drawings, a steel list and delivery details, and we price it the same way as our own steel.

Who supplies the crane or telehandler on site?

We arrange whatever a new build needs, a telehandler, a crane or a MEWP for access, and plan the lift around it. Already got plant and an operator on site? Tell us and we work around that instead.

How long does erecting a new frame take?

That turns on how many pieces there are, the access on site and whether bases are ready for us. A single beam is a short visit, while a full frame for a new unit is a longer programme.

Do you give RAMS for a new site here?

Yes. Risk assessments and method statements are provided for site work. If your site calls for a particular standard, tell us and we will confirm what we can supply.
