Bury St Edmunds, about 41 miles south west, down the A14.

Gates for the farmland round the town

Steel gates for working land, not just a driveway.

A field gate out on the farmland here takes more knocks than a driveway gate, and still has to swing and latch the same.

Swift Fabrication makes metal gates and railings to measure for the arable farms, estates and villages around Bury St Edmunds, as well as driveway and side gates for homes closer to the town.

We fabricate and fit the steel only: gate leaves, posts, hinges, latches and railing panels. We do not build brick piers or walls, carry out groundworks or supply automation, and estate gates are made automation-ready for your own installer.

How field and estate gates are made

Built in pieces, finished, then hung on your land.

Each leaf, post and panel is its own piece in our Norwich workshop, finished before anything travels down the A14 to you.

01 / Fabrication

Wide leaves and posts built to take a knock.

Field and estate gate frames come from box section, heavier where a gate is wide or exposed. We weld flat on the bench so a leaf stays square, then fit hinges and a latch that will still work in mud.

02 / Protective finish

Galvanising for gates left out on open land.

A gate standing in a field all year needs a finish that lasts, so galvanising is worth asking about before paint alone. Powder coating in an estate colour can also be arranged.

03 / Delivery and hanging

Hung on new posts across your land.

We deliver the finished gates and hang them on site, usually onto new steel posts set into farmland rather than existing piers. Leaves are lined and adjusted so they latch cleanly in wet or dry ground.

What we need to quote you

Measurements that suit an uneven field entrance.

Send the clear opening width, the height you want, and what the gate will fix to: new posts, an existing gateway or a wall. Tell us if the track rises or dips, since farm entrances rarely sit flat.

Add photos of the entrance and any style you like, and say if a stock-proof mesh infill is needed. Tell us if the gate will be automated, so the frame is braced right from the start.

We make and fit the steel only. Track surfacing, cattle grids and automation are for your own contractor or installer, and we can give them the dimensions they need to work from.

Estate railings and yard security

Railings and gates for boundaries and stockyards.

Estate railings sit on their own posts along a boundary or paddock edge, sized to the ground and fixed on site. Stepped panels follow a slope where the land does not run level.

For farms and rural businesses we also make wide sliding gate frames, security gates for yards and stores, and matching fencing panels. Dropped or seized farm gates can often be repaired rather than replaced.

Gates and railings FAQs

Before you order farm or estate gates.

Do you make gates wide enough for machinery?

Yes. Wide single or double leaves for tractors and combines are common work for us here, built from heavier box section with bracing to suit the width.

Can you set new posts in a field entrance?

Yes. Where there are no sound piers or walls to hang from, we set new steel posts into the ground at the entrance and hang the gate from those.

Should farm gates be galvanised?

Usually, yes. Gates left out on open land all year weather faster than a sheltered driveway gate, so galvanising under any paint is worth the extra thought.

Can you repair a gate that has dropped in mud?

Yes. Sagging hinges, seized pivots and bent leaves from a knock in the yard can often be straightened or rehung on site, or taken back to the workshop for a proper rebuild.
