Because we are close, the temptation is to say come and look. Better to spend a minute on the phone. What is damaged, and how: hit, dropped, worn or rusted? What size is the steel, roughly, and is it mild, galvanised or stainless? Which estate, road and unit, with a postcode? Can we park beside it? Is there power? Is anything nearby fragile, flammable or open to the public?
Then the usual order. Safe first, which with a damaged gate or stair often means taking weight off it and bracing it. Working second, where a sound repair can be done there and then. Permanent third: with base so near, new posts, leaves, stringers or rails can be made in the workshop and fitted on a return visit. You approve the cost before we pick up a tool.
A heavy steel gate or stair that has come loose can fall. Keep people well back, switch off any automation, and if anyone is hurt ring 999 first.
