Architectural steel in Lowestoft

A sea view is hard on a steel balcony.

The same outlook that sells a house in Pakefield or Kessingland puts its metalwork in the weather every day of the year.

Lowestoft is the most easterly town in the country, with homes facing the North Sea on one side and Oulton Broad on the other. Owners want balconies, terraces and big glazed openings to make the most of the water, and their builders and architects want a fabricator who thinks about corrosion before the first cut. That is how we approach architectural metalwork here.

Swift Fabrication works in mild steel and in stainless, from an architect's or designer's drawings or from a sketch we help you firm up. On this coast the key decisions are which material and coating suit the exposure, and how to detail the piece so water cannot sit in corners. Load bearing parts are made to your structural engineer's calculations.

Made for the Suffolk coast

Architectural metalwork in Lowestoft, built to last.

First decide what you want to build, then how to protect it. Outdoor pieces here usually go one of two ways: stainless throughout, or galvanised mild steel with a colour coat.

01 / Balconies and terraces

Steel balconies and canopies with a view.

Juliet balconies across French doors, walk-on balconies on posts, brackets or cantilever beams, roof terrace balustrades and porch canopies. You get the frame, fixings and balustrade, ready for glass, decking or roofing by others. Beam sizes and fixings follow your engineer's details.

02 / Marine grade stainless

Grade 316 stainless, TIG welded.

Where a design wants slim posts, a brushed handrail or bare metal beside glass, stainless is the natural pick. Close to salt water the usual specification is grade 316. It is TIG welded and the joints dressed so the rail runs smooth under the hand.

03 / Galvanised and coated

Mild steel, galvanised then colour coated.

Mild steel costs less and suits heavier frames, railings and canopies. Hot dip galvanising protects it inside and out, and powder coat or paint on top gives the colour. Both are arranged for you, and we put in the vent and drain holes that dipping needs.

From first call to fitting

Decide the material early and the rest follows.

Reasons to use our workshop

Tell us where the building stands. Facing the beach at Pakefield is a different exposure from a sheltered garden in Carlton Colville, and it changes what we recommend. Send the drawings, or photos of the wall or opening with sizes, plus any thoughts you have on glass, timber and colour.

Estimates are free and the price is settled with you before any steel is ordered. Then we drive over to measure, since a balcony has to meet brickwork and door openings as built, not as drawn. Stainless and coated work both take longer than plain primed steel, so the programme we give reflects the finish you picked.

Building close to the seafront regeneration, or on a tight plot? Mention access for delivery and lifting when you first call.

Self build or renovation

Bespoke metalwork for a Lowestoft home.

Homeowners often begin with a picture saved on a phone, and that is enough for a first chat. We look at how the balcony or canopy would be held up, what the wall is built of, how steel gets round the back of the house and which material suits the spot. Then we help turn the idea into something that can be drawn, priced and made.

Walk-on balconies and canopies are structural, and certifying structures is not our role. Your engineer or designer supplies the calculations and deals with Building Control. We make and fit to their details.

Our quote checklist

Norwich workshop, Suffolk coast

Made inland, fitted by the sea.

Fabrication happens in Norwich, away from the salt, and the finished pieces travel down the A146 past Loddon and Beccles. We fit in Lowestoft itself, north and south of the Gull Wing bridge, and in Oulton Broad, Carlton Colville, Pakefield and Kessingland. Supply only is fine if your builder prefers to do the fitting.

It is a fair drive, so visits are planned with care: one to measure, one to install, with photos and phone calls doing the rest. That keeps travel off your bill as far as we can.

Lowestoft balcony questions

Before you order steel for a coastal home.

What lasts by the sea, what it costs in time, and who does which part of the job.

Is stainless steel better than galvanised by the sea?

Neither wins everywhere. Stainless keeps a clean, slim look and suits handrails and glass posts. Galvanised and coated mild steel is good value for larger frames and railings. We will talk you through both for your spot.

Can you galvanise a balcony?

Galvanising can be arranged, and for an outdoor mild steel balcony in Lowestoft we would normally recommend it. The frame has to be designed for dipping, which can mean making it in bolted sections. Powder coat over the top is optional.

Do you supply the glass for balustrades?

Our part is the steel. Posts, handrails and frames are made glass-ready to the sizes your glazier or designer gives, and the glass is supplied and fitted by them. We are happy to agree hole positions with your glazier before we start.

Do you travel to Oulton Broad and Kessingland?

Yes. Both fall within our Lowestoft area, as do Pakefield and Carlton Colville. We measure, deliver and install from Norwich, and group visits where we can.

Who works out the balcony loadings?

Your structural engineer. They size the beams, posts and fixings and confirm the balustrade loading, and Building Control checks it. We fabricate to those figures, and can make the hidden support steel as well as the parts on show.
