Architectural steel by the sea

On this coast the finish comes first.

Wind off the North Sea carries salt a long way inland. Painted mild steel with nothing under the paint soon shows it.

Swift Fabrication makes architectural metalwork for Great Yarmouth, a town where much of the steel on show lives outdoors. Seafront cafes, bars, arcades and hotels, holiday parks up the coast at Caister, guest houses, and homes in Gorleston and Bradwell all want balustrades, canopies, stairs and frames that look smart and cope with the weather.

So the first conversation is about exposure. How close is the piece to the sea, does spray reach it, will the public lean on it all summer? Then we talk protection: hot dip galvanising under a powder coat or paint, or stainless steel where the design wants bare metal. Coatings are arranged for you, and load bearing items follow your engineer's figures.

What the coast asks for

Architectural metalwork for Great Yarmouth venues.

Work on this stretch of the Norfolk coast tends to fall into three groups: leisure and hospitality on the front, holiday parks, and sea view homes.

01 / Seafront and leisure

Terraces, canopies and outside stairs.

Balustrades for raised terraces and beer gardens, canopies over doors that face the wind, external stairs up to first floor bars and flats, steel framed screens to shelter outdoor seating. Posts ready for glass or steel infill, and fixings chosen so they do not rust and stain the paving.

02 / Parks and clubhouses

Steelwork for parks and clubhouses.

A holiday park has a lot of metal to keep smart: clubhouse bar and counter frames, railings round pools and play areas, ramps and handrails up to reception, canopies over entrances. We can make a run of matching panels if you need the same item many times.

03 / Homes with a sea view

Balconies for houses near the water.

Juliet balconies, walk-on balconies carried on posts or brackets, stair balustrades and steel frames around big glazing for houses and flats in Gorleston and Caister. Frame and balustrade from us, calculations from your engineer.

Timing work round the season

Made over winter, fitted before the season opens.

Why work with Swift?

A seaside business earns its money between Easter and the autumn half term, so the sensible time for building work is when the doors are shut. If you want new metalwork up for the start of the season, get in touch in the autumn or early winter. Drawings, a sketch or photos with sizes will get us going.

The estimate costs nothing and the price is fixed with you before we cut anything. Steel that must meet an existing opening, wall or slab gets measured on site. Allow time for coating: galvanising and powder coating are arranged with outside specialists and add to the lead time, so your date comes once design and finish are settled.

Need something sooner, in the middle of summer? Ring us. We will say plainly what can be made and fitted around your trading hours.

Only got a photo?

Tell us the spot and what you picture.

A guest house owner wanting a smarter handrail up the front steps, or a family in Bradwell after a small balcony, rarely has an architect. Send a photo of the place and some rough measurements. We go through sections, fixings into old brick or concrete and the coating, then help you work up a design we can fabricate.

One limit to be clear about: we make steelwork, we do not certify it. Where a balcony, canopy or stair needs calculations or Building Control sign off, your engineer or designer provides that.

Quote checklist: what to send

Getting steel to the coast

Twenty miles down the A47.

Everything is fabricated in Norwich and brought to Great Yarmouth along the A47 and the Acle Straight. One visit to measure and one to fit is the usual pattern, and we try to combine trips to keep your cost down. Gorleston, Caister, Bradwell and Acle are all covered, along with the east Norfolk villages in between.

Old railings already showing rust? Sometimes a section can be cut out, repaired and recoated instead of being replaced. Send a photo and we will say which we think is better value.

Great Yarmouth questions

Seaside metalwork, asked and answered.

Salt air, coatings, timing around the season and how far we travel, in plain terms.

Will steel railings rust on Great Yarmouth seafront?

Not quickly if they are protected properly. For exposed spots we suggest hot dip galvanising with powder coat or paint over it, or stainless steel. Bare painted mild steel is a false economy this close to the sea.

Which stainless steel suits the coast?

Grade 316, often called marine grade, is the usual choice near salt water, and it still wants washing down now and then to stay bright. Put the grade on your drawing or ask us. Stainless is TIG welded where a fine joint matters.

Can you fit outside the holiday season?

Yes, and we would encourage it. Fitting while you are closed means no customers to work around and no lost trade. Contact us in good time, because coatings lengthen the job, and we will give a realistic date once we have seen it.

Do you cover Gorleston, Caister and Bradwell?

Yes. All three are part of the same run for us from Norwich, with Acle on the way. We deliver and install, or supply only if your own builder is fitting.

Can you match railings we already have?

In most cases. Send photos and the main sizes of a panel and we will make new sections to the same pattern in steel. If the originals are cast iron, we will tell you what can and cannot be copied in fabricated steel.
