Great Yarmouth, about 20 miles east of our Norwich workshop on the A47.

Fire escape stairs, Great Yarmouth

On this coast, the finish matters as much as the steel.

An outside stair in Great Yarmouth lives in salt air all year. Painted mild steel on its own does not last long there.

Most of the demand for steel staircases in Great Yarmouth is outdoors: a rear escape stair for flats over a shop, a flight up to the first floor door of a guest house, steps and handrails around a holiday park. All of it faces the wind off the sea.

That is why we make coastal stairs to be hot dip galvanised. The stringers, treads, landings and balustrade panels are fabricated one by one in Norwich, with vent and drain holes for the galvaniser and no sealed hollows to trap water. Dipping is arranged with an outside works. The parts then come along the Acle Straight and bolt together on site, so no welding burns through the zinc.

External stairs, escapes and guarding

Tell us what the stair serves and how exposed it is.

Drawings from your architect or fire consultant are ideal. If you have none, send the height to the upper door, the space in the yard and a few photos. The estimate costs nothing.

01 / Escape stairs

Fire escapes for flats and guest houses.

Rear and side escape stairs for converted houses, flats above shops and guest houses, with chequer plate treads that drain, a landing at each door and guarding to the heights on your drawings. Where the only way in is a side passage, every piece is sized to go down it.

02 / Parks and leisure

Steps and rails on holiday parks.

Access stairs, short flights of steps, deck balustrades and handrails for holiday parks and seafront leisure sites around Caister, Gorleston and Bradwell. Fitting can be planned for the closed season, away from guests.

03 / Yards and industry

Access stairs for port side units.

Galvanised access stairs, platform steps and handrails for units on Harfreys, Gapton Hall, South Denes and Beacon Park. Balcony and terrace balustrades that face the sea can be galvanised mild steel or stainless, with posts set out for glass.

Whose figures we fabricate to

Escape widths, rise and guarding come from your designer.

For a fire escape, the width, the rise and going, the landing sizes, the guarding heights and the loadings come out of your fire strategy and the Building Regulations. Your architect, fire consultant or Building Control decides them. A landlord in Great Yarmouth should have that settled first.

We then fabricate to those figures. Swift Fabrication does not certify that a stair complies, and calculations for the structure or for fixings into old brickwork belong to your structural engineer. If something drawn will trap water or be hard to galvanise, we raise it before we start.

If the council or the fire service has asked for the stair, send us their letter with the enquiry.

Quotes for Great Yarmouth

What to send for a price.

Give us the height from the ground to each door, the width needed, where the foot of the stair can land and what the wall is built of. Say how close the building is to the seafront or the river, because that guides the finish. Photos of the yard help.

We drive over to measure before cutting anything, as old Yarmouth walls are rarely square or plumb. Galvanising adds a stage at an outside works, and powder coating over the zinc can be arranged if you want a colour. Allow time for both. The programme we give you with the estimate will be a realistic one.

Also in Great Yarmouth

Gates and railings for the same salt air.

Our workshop also makes steel gates, boundary railings and security fencing for homes and yards in Great Yarmouth, Gorleston and Caister, galvanised against the coast like the stairs. Acle and the villages beside the A47 on the way over from Norwich are covered too.

Every enquiry gets a free estimate. Nothing starts until the price is agreed with you, whether you are a landlord, a park operator, a builder or a homeowner.

Great Yarmouth stair FAQs

Asked by Great Yarmouth property owners.

Should a stair near the seafront be galvanised?

For outside steel in Great Yarmouth we would nearly always say yes. Hot dip galvanising coats the steel inside and out, and it can be powder coated on top if you want a colour. Both finishes are arranged with outside specialists.

Will the fire escape satisfy Building Control?

It is made to the widths, rise, going and guarding heights your designer or Building Control set out. Approval sits with them and not with us, so agree the design before ordering.

Can you replace a rusted stair on a guest house?

Yes. We measure the old stair and the doors it serves, make the new one in galvanised pieces and fit it in the same place. Taking the old steel down can be part of the job, planned so the escape route is shut for as short a time as we can.

Do you cover Gorleston, Caister and Bradwell too?

Yes. The whole Great Yarmouth area is around 20 miles from our Norwich base, so site visits are booked ahead and fitting is planned in full days.
