Steel gates built for the salt air

Metal gates and railings in Great Yarmouth

Quote my Great Yarmouth gates

Metal gates in Great Yarmouth have the North Sea to deal with. Ours are made to measure in steel, with galvanising arranged before they leave Norwich, for guest houses, holiday parks, homes and port yards. Made by us, hung by us.

Great Yarmouth, about 20 miles east of our Norwich workshop along the A47.

Coastal gates and railings

Metal gates for a coast where the finish decides everything.

Wind off the sea carries salt well inland, and painted steel with one chipped corner will be bleeding rust by spring.

That is why every enquiry for metal gates from Great Yarmouth, Gorleston or Caister starts with the same question from us: how is it going to be protected? Once that is settled we make driveway gates, side gates, railing panels and yard gates to the sizes of your opening.

We are fabricators, so our work is the steel itself. Gate leaves, posts, hinges, latches, drop bolts and railing panels are made in the workshop and fitted by us. Brick piers, boundary walls, concrete and digging stay with your builder. Motors and access control stay with your automation company, though we will build the frame ready for their brackets and arms.

From the workshop to the seafront

Welded in Norwich, dipped, then brought east.

The order matters near the sea. All cutting, drilling and welding is finished before the steel is galvanised, so no bare edge is left for the salt to find.

01 / Build

Every hole drilled before the zinc goes on.

Leaves, posts and panels are made as separate pieces from box section and solid bar. Hinge plates, latch keeps and vent holes are all done at this stage, because drilling a galvanised gate afterwards breaks the coating.

02 / Protect

Hot dip galvanising, colour on top if wanted.

We arrange hot dip galvanising, which coats the steel inside and out, including inside hollow sections. It can stay as plain grey zinc, which suits a yard, or be powder coated over the top for a guest house or a home.

03 / Hang

Down the Acle Straight and onto site.

Finished pieces travel to Great Yarmouth on our own transport. We fix to sound piers, walls or steel posts we have made, using fixings suited to a coastal setting, then set the leaves so they close square against the wind.

For an accurate estimate

Tell us how close to the sea the gates will be.

A seafront terrace, a park behind the dunes and a house in Bradwell get different weather. Alongside that, send the clear width of the opening, the height you are after, what the gates will hang from and any slope across the entrance.

Photographs help a great deal, as does a picture of a style you like. If your present gates have rusted through, show us where they failed, since it usually points to the detail to avoid. Say too if the new ones will be motorised, so the frame and bracket positions suit your installer.

One thing to be plain about: steel is all we make and fit. Piers, walls, post footings and groundworks are for a builder, and automation kit comes from a specialist. We supply both with the sizes and fixing points they need.

Holiday parks, guest houses, yards

Railings and security gates around the port.

Guest houses and flats along the front often want railings on a dwarf wall and a small gate to match. Holiday parks at Caister or Hopton tend to need wide entrance gates, barriers of railing between plots and handgates on paths.

On South Denes, Harfreys or Gapton Hall the job is security: tall swing or sliding gate frames and fence panels for a yard, heavy enough for daily lorry traffic. A gate that has been struck or has dropped on its hinges can be repaired by our mobile welder.

Architectural metalwork in Yarmouth

East Norfolk coast

Yarmouth, Gorleston, Caister and the villages.

As well as the town itself we cover Gorleston and Beacon Park, Bradwell, Caister, Hopton and back along the A47 to Acle. Everything is fabricated in Norwich, then delivered and hung by the people who made it.

Estimates are free and can start from your own sizes and photographs. We measure the opening ourselves before ordering steel, and the price is settled with you first.

Coastal gate questions

Questions from the Yarmouth coast.

Will steel gates rust by the sea?

Unprotected or thinly painted steel will. Hot dip galvanised steel stands up to salt air far better, and a powder coat over it adds colour and another layer. We arrange both and will advise which suits your spot.

Do you cover Gorleston and Caister?

Yes. Gorleston, Caister, Bradwell, Hopton and Acle are all covered from Norwich, about 20 miles away. We visit to measure, then return to hang the gates.

Can you make security gates for a port yard?

Yes. We make swing and sliding gate frames, posts and fence panels in heavier sections for commercial yards. Concrete bases, tracks set in the ground and any motors are by others, and we work to their details.

Can old railings be copied and replaced?

Usually. Send photographs and a few sizes of the existing pattern. We can fabricate matching panels in new steel, have them galvanised, and fix them to your wall.
