Farm, field and estate gates

Wide metal gates for farm machinery that keeps growing.

A gateway that suited a tractor thirty years ago is a tight squeeze for a modern combine header or an artic collecting grain.

Around Dereham that is a common reason to replace a gate. We make steel gates to whatever span the entrance needs, as a long single leaf, an even pair or a main leaf with a small one for everyday use. Yard, field, estate entrance and stock handling gates are all work we take on.

Be clear on who does what. Swift Fabrication makes and hangs the steel: gate leaves, hanging and slamming posts, hinges, latches, drop bolts and any railing panels. Digging holes, concreting posts in, building brick piers and laying walls is left to you, your farm staff or a builder. Electric openers are left to an automation installer, and we will make the frame and posts ready for whatever they specify.

From steel stock to swinging gate

Long leaves, stout posts, all made off site.

Nothing is cut in your yard. Each leaf and post is fabricated and coated as a finished item, loaded in Norwich, and driven the 16 miles out along the A47 ready to hang.

01 / Welding

Long spans kept straight with bracing.

A five metre leaf wants to droop at the latch end. We build in a diagonal brace, use box section for the frame and rails, and hang it from a heavy post on adjustable hinges so the nose can be lifted again if it ever settles.

02 / Weatherproofing

Galvanised for mud, muck and winter.

Farm gates live a hard life among slurry, fertiliser dust and wet verges. Hot dip galvanising, which we arrange, is the sensible finish there. For an estate entrance or a house in town, a powder coated colour is just as easy to organise.

03 / Hanging day

We bring the power and the plant.

A field entrance rarely has a socket nearby, so the van carries a generator and welding set. With the posts set solid beforehand, we hang the leaves, set the hinge height, fit the latch and drop bolts and leave the gate swinging level.

What to send for a price

Pace it out, photograph it, tell us what uses it.

Measure the gap between the existing posts, or the width you would like if everything is coming out. Let us know the widest machine or lorry that needs to pass, how high the gate should stand, and whether the track climbs or dips as it meets the road.

A couple of photographs show us the posts, the hedge line and the verge. If stock will be held behind the gate, mention it, as that changes the bar spacing and the latch. For estate or house gates, a picture of a pattern you like is handy. Flag up any thought of automating later on.

Remember that concrete and brick are not our trade. If new posts are needed, we make them in steel and tell you the hole positions, depth of post and centres. You or your builder set them, then we return to hang.

Market town homes and trade yards

Driveway gates and railings in Dereham itself.

In the town, the work is on a smaller scale. A pair of driveway gates for a house on one of the older streets, a side gate between house and boundary, or railings along a front wall are each measured up and made as one-off pieces in the same workshop.

Firms on Rashes Green and Yaxham Road sometimes need a yard secured with taller gates and a few fence panels, which we also make. And where a field gate has been caught by a trailer or dropped on worn hinges, our mobile welder can often fix it where it stands.

Farm and house gate FAQs

Questions from farms and households.

How wide can you make a farm gate?

As wide as the entrance needs, within reason. Very long single leaves get heavy, so beyond a certain span a pair, or a main leaf with a smaller one, works better. Tell us what has to drive through and we will suggest a layout.

Will you concrete the posts in?

No, that part is yours or your builder's. We make the steel posts, give you the centres and depths, and come back to hang the gates once they are solid.

Can you fit gates where there is no power?

Yes. Our van carries its own generator and welding plant, so a gateway at the far end of a farm track is no problem. We only ask for a note on access, so we know whether the van can reach it in wet weather.

Do you cover villages outside Dereham?

Yes. Shipdham, Mattishall, North Elmham, Swaffham and the rest of mid Norfolk are all covered from our Norwich workshop, so rural addresses are no trouble for us.
